Best Things to Do in Lexington KY: A Local's Guide
Best Things to Do in Lexington KY: A Local's Guide
If you have spent any real time in Lexington you know the difference between what the tourism websites tell you and what locals actually do. Whether you are looking for things to do in Lexington KY or just exploring the best local points of interest, this guide covers everything from Keeneland to the Distillery District and beyond. I have lived here long enough to have opinions, and this is the real list. Places I have been, things I have done, and a few spots I have not made it to yet but are absolutely on my radar.
Keeneland
If you do one thing in Lexington, make it Keeneland. Twice a year this legendary race course transforms the entire city. I have been many times and it never gets old. We have a full guide on the site covering everything -- what to wear, how to bet, where to park for free, and what to drink. Read it before you go.
The Distillery District
One of the coolest neighborhoods in Lexington and honestly one of the most underrated things to do in the city. I have visited almost everything here.
Start with Goodfellas pizza. I have been many times. If you are looking for great New York style pizza and also in the mood for a few drinks, this is the place to go. Try to get a seat at the table inside the smoke stack if you can. It is a little different and kind of neat.
After pizza, walk over to Crank and Boom for ice cream. I will put my reputation on the line for this one. It is the best ice cream in Lexington. Any flavor is good but my personal favorite is the Bourbon and Honey. Get that one.
From there wander through Barrel House and catch live music at The Burl which also has a retro arcade inside. James E. Pepper Distillery is right there too, one of the oldest distilleries in Kentucky with a genuinely interesting history. Manchester Music Hall rounds out the area as one of the best concert venues in the city.
And do not overlook Halligan's for a sit down meal. I stopped in recently and had the Smokehouse Fries -- house fries loaded with pulled pork, queso, shredded cheese, onion, bbq sauce, sour cream, and jalapenos. It is more than enough food for two people to split and I can absolutely recommend it.
You could easily spend an entire day in the Distillery District.
The Summit at Fritz Farm
The Summit is Lexington's premier mixed-use shopping, dining, and lifestyle center located at the corner of Nicholasville Road and Man o' War Boulevard. It is currently undergoing a $14.1 million expansion that will add The Barn food hall and a central green space, which should make it even more of a destination when everything is finished. I have spent more time and money here than I care to admit.
Start with food because that is what I always do. Honeywood by Ouita Michel is one of my favorite restaurants in Lexington. The menu changes with the seasons and everything is locally sourced. Shake Shack has what I genuinely believe are the best burgers in Lexington and they sometimes offer a bourbon milkshake exclusive to the Kentucky market. I first discovered Shake Shack at Grand Central Station in New York City and was thrilled when one opened here. Condado Tacos is great for build your own tacos and strong margaritas, Blue Sushi Sake Grill is a solid option for sushi and craft cocktails, and Cafe Patachou is a newer addition worth checking out.
The shopping is where you can really do some damage. Apple is here and it is the only Apple Store in Lexington, so it is always packed. Nike has a full retail store with a solid sneaker wall. Pottery Barn is a dangerous place to walk into if you just bought a house, and Williams-Sonoma is right there too with great kitchen gear. Lululemon is my wife's favorite store here, which means it is also the most expensive store here for me. You will also find Anthropologie, Ariat for western and equestrian wear which makes perfect sense for Lexington, Free People, Warby Parker for affordable glasses, Brandy Melville, Half-Moon Outfitters for outdoor gear, and Bath and Body Works which you can smell from three doors down and I mean that as a compliment.
Whole Foods Market is the anchor tenant and one of the nicest grocery stores in Lexington. Great prepared food section if you want to grab lunch while you are there.
If you need to work off all that food, Orangetheory Fitness will absolutely wreck you in the best way, Solidcore does pilates on a reformer that somehow makes 50 minutes feel like three hours, and Alo Yoga has premium yoga wear and studio space. Hand and Stone Massage is perfect for recovery days. Blo Blow Dry Bar and Waxing the City round things out on the services side.
If you have visitors in town, Origin Hotel is a boutique hotel right on the property and a great option. SpringHill Suites is also there if you prefer the Marriott experience.
You could easily spend an entire day at The Summit and not run out of things to do.
The Palomar Centre Area
If The Summit is the flashy one, the Palomar area near Harrodsburg Road and Man o' War Boulevard is the one that feels more like home. It is a more local feeling shopping and dining destination where you are less likely to fight for a parking spot and more likely to run into someone you know. I end up over here more often than I expected when we moved to Lexington.
Sedona Taphouse is the standout here. Great craft beer selection and a menu that goes way beyond typical bar food. Malone's is a Lexington institution for steaks and has been for years. If you have not been, fix that. Harry's is right next door and is the more casual sibling with a solid burger and a good patio. Bella Cafe and Grille is a local favorite for Mediterranean food and their chicken shawarma is genuinely addictive. Papi's does excellent Mexican food with generous portions and strong margaritas. Omakase Sushi and Grill is the spot for sushi in this part of town and it is a separate location from the original on East High Street. Floating Lotus Kitchen is a family run cafe doing wholesome sandwiches, bowls, and soups with global flavors and it has quietly become a local favorite. Playa Bowls is great if you are in the mood for acai or smoothie bowls. Jersey Mike's is there for solid subs and you will also find a Starbucks, Panera, and Qdoba if you need something quick.
The area is also about to get even better. Graeter's Ice Cream is expected to open in 2026 and if you have ever had their black raspberry chocolate chip you already understand the excitement. Firebirds Wood Fired Grill is also coming in 2026 and should be a strong addition to the dinner options out here.
Publix is the grocery anchor here and if you have never been to a Publix before, their subs alone are worth the trip. Fan Outfitters is the place for UK Wildcats gear, custom embroidery, and everything blue and white. If you bleed Big Blue this store is dangerous for your wallet. John's Run/Walk Shop has been keeping Lexington moving since 1978 and is one of the best local running specialty stores you will find anywhere. Orangetheory Fitness also has a location at Palomar, separate from the one at The Summit, so you have no excuse no matter which side of town you are on. The Fountains at Palomar and Ethington Shoppes are right nearby and add even more dining and retail to this stretch of Harrodsburg Road. The whole corridor has quietly become one of the better areas in Lexington for grabbing a meal without dealing with Nicholasville Road traffic.
Fayette Mall
Fayette Mall is Lexington's main indoor mall on Nicholasville Road and it has a huge variety of stores and dining options under one roof. I am not going to list every tenant because they change frequently, but you can check the full directory on their site. It is the kind of place where you go in for one thing and come out two hours later with four bags. Classic mall experience and it gets the job done.
The Plaza at Fayette Mall
Right next to the main mall is The Plaza at Fayette Mall, an open air lifestyle center that adds even more to the Nicholasville Road corridor. Cinemark Fayette Mall and XD is the entertainment anchor here with 16 screens including the XD auditorium, and it is where I see most of my movies. Old Navy and Guitar Center are also out here. You can check out the full directory for everything else. Between the main mall and The Plaza you can pretty much find whatever you need without going anywhere else.
Hamburg Pavilion
Hamburg Pavilion is one of Lexington's largest shopping and dining destinations and it anchors the east side of town off Man o' War Boulevard. If you live on the Hamburg side of Lexington this is basically your home base.
The dining is strong out here. Malone's has a location at Hamburg and it is just as good as the Palomar one for steaks. Drake's is one of the best hangout spots in Lexington with great burgers, surprisingly good sushi, and a rooftop patio that is packed on nice days. Wild Eggs is the move for breakfast and brunch and the portions are massive. Bonefish Grill is worth it for the Bang Bang Shrimp alone. Carrabba's Italian Grill does classic Italian dishes on a wood fired grill and Johnny Carino's is a solid casual Italian option as well. And of course Chick-fil-A is here because it is everywhere and the drive through line wraps around the building every single day which tells you everything you need to know.
On the retail side you have Target, Best Buy, Dick's Sporting Goods, and Barnes and Noble which is one of the last great bookstores and I hope it never goes away. There are over 70 tenants out here so check Hamburg Pavilion's site for the full list.
LexLive
I saw Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings here in the LFX auditorium and the screen is massive. The LFX features a wall-to-wall 80-foot screen using a Christie Digital RGB Pure Laser projection system. The sound system has 150 Dolby Atmos speakers and the seats are heated leather recliners with motorized headrests and attached tray tables. The auditorium seats around 300 people. LexLive claims it is the largest movie screen in Kentucky -- I cannot personally verify that but I can tell you it feels like it. Beyond movies the LFX screen is also used for live sporting events, esports tournaments, concerts, and operas. In addition to the LFX there are nine other luxury auditoriums with screens around 45 feet wide, plus 13 bowling lanes, 50 arcade games, and 3 bars. Great option for a group or a date night when you want options.
Bigg Blue Martini
Kentucky Monthly Magazine called this Kentucky's best martini bar and after visiting I am not going to argue with them. Located downtown at the Hilton right across from Rupp Arena, this is the pregame spot for UK fans on game night and an excellent choice any night of the week. They also keep things interesting with a seasonal cocktail menu and local craft beers on tap so there is always something new to try.
Here is what I ordered and what you should know:
The Bigg Blue Martini -- New Amsterdam Citrus Vodka, Blue Curacao, Island Pucker, Sour, and Pineapple with an orange wedge. Bright, citrusy, and goes down dangerously easy. A great starting point if it is your first time here.
The Watermelon Rum Punch -- RumHaven Coconut Rum, Watermelon Mint Liqueur, Lime Juice, Peach Schnapps, Cranberry Juice, Orange Juice, and Soda. My personal favorite of the night. Refreshing, fun, and dangerous in the best way.
The Not Until I've Had My Martini -- Benchmark Single Barrel Espresso Infused Bourbon, Faretti Espresso Liqueur, Bourbon Cream, and Brown Sugar Simple Syrup. Rich and smooth. One thing to know -- this drink is very coffee forward. I am not a coffee person and I still enjoyed it, but if coffee is not your thing order something else. Also worth noting -- the martinis here are stronger than your average cocktail. Drinking two on an empty stomach will hit you like a flash mob. You have been warned. DANGER: Karaoke fuel overload.
Save room for the Banana Foster dessert. Just do it.
Rupp Arena
I have been here many times for both concerts and Kentucky Basketball games. As a concert venue it is excellent -- good sightlines, solid sound, easy to get in and out. But Kentucky Basketball is something else entirely. The environment during a UK game is genuinely unmatched. The crowd is loud, the energy is electric, and Big Blue Nation shows up. One tip -- eat before you go. There are plenty of great restaurants right around Rupp Arena and you will pay a fraction of what you would spend on concessions inside. But everything is expensive nowadays.
Tapster
Self pour bar with 50 plus taps downtown across from Rupp Arena. Opened in May 2025 and immediately went on my list. You pour your own drinks and pay by the ounce which means you can try a little of everything without committing to a full pour. I have not made it here yet but it is high on my list.
The Commons
An up and coming entertainment district worth keeping an eye on. Battle Axes is already open, Pickleball Kingdom is there, and RD1 Distillery is a Kentucky Bourbon Trail stop. The Rail -- a 2,000 capacity live music venue -- is expected to open Fall 2026 and could be a game changer for the area. I have not been yet but this one is on my radar.
Red Mile
The second oldest harness racing track in the world, dating back to 1875. The red clay track is iconic. Harness racing runs late July through October. Beyond the racing there is a casino with over 900 gaming terminals and a Caesars Sportsbook. I have not made it out here yet but it has been on my list for a while.
Main Event
On Nicholasville Road with over 100 arcade games, bowling, and laser tag. Great option for families or a group looking for something active. I have not been yet but it consistently comes up when people ask about things to do in Lexington.
Malibu Jack's
Another popular Lexington option that keeps coming up. On my list.
Lexington Opera House
A beautiful historic venue in downtown Lexington hosting concerts, Broadway shows, and performances throughout the year. I have not been yet but it is absolutely on my list. If you are visiting Lexington and there is a show on, check what is playing.
Kentucky Theater
One of Lexington's most beloved landmarks. A classic single screen movie theater in the heart of downtown that has been showing films since 1922. The kind of place that makes you appreciate movies differently. I have not been yet but I fully intend to fix that.
Lexington Cemetery
This one surprises people but locals know it. In the spring the Lexington Cemetery is one of the most beautiful spots in the city for photography. The trees bloom and it is genuinely stunning. I have been out there with a camera and it is the kind of place that does not feel like what you expect a cemetery to feel like. Worth a visit in April when everything is in bloom.
Jacobson Park
A 216 acre recreational park with something for everyone. My wife and I have been to Friday Flicks here -- free outdoor movie nights held in June. You bring your own towels and food, find a spot on the grass, and watch a movie under the sky. It is a great date night and one of those only in Lexington experiences that does not cost you anything.
Beyond the movies, Jacobson Park has pedal boat and kayak rentals on the reservoir, a massive castle style ADA accessible playground, a splash pad, a dog park, an 18 hole disc golf course, volleyball courts, basketball courts, fishing from the banks and accessible piers, and seven shelter sites with grills for picnics. The park also hosts Kite Day in April. One tip -- go on a weekday or early morning to beat the weekend crowds, and bring sunscreen since some areas have limited shade.
And in September and October, Jacobson Park transforms into something completely different. Fright Nights is one of the premier haunted attractions in the region, spanning 40 acres with multiple themed haunted houses including 13 Doors, Dark Forest, and Candyland. It is known as a genuinely scary experience -- not a child friendly event -- and runs through Halloween season. If you are in Lexington in the fall and you enjoy haunted attractions, this is worth checking out.
The Bottom Line
Lexington is not a city that announces itself. It rewards the people who show up and explore it. Whether you are here for Keeneland, passing through on a bourbon trail trip, or thinking about moving here, this list is where I would start. And I will keep adding to it as I make my way through the rest of my own list. While you are here, check out our restaurant horse race to see where Lexington is eating right now, and the Last Call Leaderboard to see where everyone is going out tonight.
