Derby Day

The Kentucky Derby is the first leg of the Triple Crown and the longest continuously held sporting event in America, running every year since 1875. Twenty horses will break from the gate at Churchill Downs for 1 1/4 miles on the dirt, with an expected post time of 6:57 PM ET on May 3, 2026.

The full Derby card typically features 14 races throughout the day starting around 10:30 AM, with the Kentucky Derby as the final race. The Kentucky Oaks, the premier race for three-year-old fillies, runs the day before on May 2.

The Derby is broadcast nationally on NBC. If you are watching from Lexington, plenty of local bars and restaurants will have it on every screen. See our local recommendations below.
