I Visited Halligan's, the Herald Leader's Best Bar and Grill in Lexington

I'm always on the lookout for spots in the Distillery District that I haven't been to yet. The area keeps growing, new places keep opening, and Halligan's Bar and Grill had been on my list for a while. My wife and I finally went on a Saturday afternoon at 1:16 PM. We were the only ones there, which surprised me on a Saturday of all days, but it ended up being kind of perfect.

Halligan's sits at 1170 Manchester Street, tucked into the historic James Pepper rickhouse. If you've been to Goodfellas or Middle Fork, you're in the same neighborhood. The location alone is worth a mention. Old bourbon rickhouses have their own character and Halligan's takes that and rolls with it.

The place was opened in 2022 by Otis Cveticanin, a retired Lexington firefighter, and the whole concept is a tribute to first responders. The Lexington Herald Leader named them Best Bar and Grill in 2023, which they have printed on their menus. The decor is genuinely cool. Retired firefighting gear is on display throughout the space, helmets and jackets, and there's a custom mural dedicated to firefighters, police, and EMTs. The mission is to give first responders a place to unwind and to invite the public in to connect with them. It's a sports bar with a soul.

We sat down and right away I noticed the QR code on the table. You scan it, the menu pulls up on your phone, and you order from there. The food gets brought out. The only thing the server brings is your drinks. That's it. Otherwise they pretty much leave you alone unless you go up to the bar. I'd never seen this at a bar in Lexington before. For some people that's going to be a turnoff. If you want a server checking in on you and recommending dishes, this isn't that kind of place. Even though I like being checked on, I loved it. It was different. I could just relax and enjoy the atmosphere and my food. We ordered when we wanted, and didn't have to flag anyone down. That said, the bartender and staff were really friendly and helpful when we did interact with them, which made the whole low pressure setup feel intentional rather than impersonal.

While we waited on the food, I noticed the jukebox. It's a TouchTunes, which means you can download the TouchTunes app and queue songs from your phone right at the table. I went down the rabbit hole immediately. I played "A Boy Named Sue" by Johnny Cash and "San Quentin" by Nickelback. Hey, don't hate. I felt the same way about Nickelback for a long time. I came around eventually.

Between the QR code ordering and the jukebox app, you can essentially run your whole meal from your phone without ever talking to anyone. That should tell you everything about the vibe. It's the kind of place where you order on your phone, play your own music, eat too much food, and nobody's hovering.

I had the Smokehouse Fries, $12.99. House fries loaded up with pulled pork, queso, shredded cheese, onion, BBQ sauce, sour cream, and jalapeños. The pulled pork was tender, the queso was generous, the BBQ sauce was sweet, and the jalapeños gave it just enough kick without taking over. I did pop two jalapeño slices in my mouth and for a second or two I thought I was going to need to find the closest fire hose and be hosed down. It was delicious. It's also a lot of food. I'm telling you right now this is enough for two people. It took both of us to finish it. If you go, plan to share or come hungry.

Going at 1:16 PM on a Saturday and being the only ones in the place felt strange but here's the thing about the Distillery District. Weekday afternoons and early Saturdays can be quiet, but Friday nights and Saturday nights are a different story. The whole area gets packed. Parking is the real challenge. I've literally driven in circles for 30 minutes waiting for a spot to open up on busy nights. If you want a relaxed Halligan's visit, go in the off hours. If you want the full sports bar experience with a crowd, go on a weekend night and budget extra time for parking. Both are valid. Just know which one you're signing up for.

I'll be back. Next time I want to try one of their burgers and sit at the bar instead of a table so I can actually meet some of the staff. From everything I've read about Otis and the team, talking to them is part of the experience and I missed that on my first visit. And honestly, I want to hear more about the firefighter angle from the people behind it.

If you haven't been, it's worth the stop. And if you're putting together a Distillery District day, you can hit Halligan's, then walk over to Goodfellas, James E. Pepper Distillery, or The Burl without ever moving your car. Assuming you found a parking spot in the first place.
