Complete Guide to Horse Farm Tours
Lexington is the Horse Capital of the World, and one of the best ways to experience that firsthand is through a horse farm tour. When I first discovered Visit Horse Country, I was surprised by just how many tour options exist. There are dozens of farms and experiences within a short drive of downtown Lexington, covering everything from watching newborn foals take their first steps to standing next to a stallion worth more than most houses.
How It Works
Most tours are booked through Visit Horse Country. Prices typically range from $20 to $75 depending on the experience. Tours run anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours and group sizes vary by farm. Some farms also handle their own reservations directly, so check their websites or reach out to their stallion offices. One important thing to know is that some farms do not allow Uber or Lyft, so you will need your own vehicle. Check each tour listing for specific details before you book.
Mares and Foals Tours
These are the tours that make most people fall in love with horse country. There is nothing quite like watching a mare with her foal in a spring paddock, and if you time it right during foaling season you might see a baby that is only a few days old.
Mill Ridge Farm and Taylor Made Farm are the most popular starting points and both do an excellent job making visitors feel welcome. Gainsborough Farm is owned by the Ruler of Dubai through Godolphin, which still feels surreal to say out loud when you are standing on a farm 15 minutes from downtown Lexington. Pin Oak Stud and Spendthrift Farm are both beautiful properties with long histories in the thoroughbred business. Lanes End Farm and Stonestreet Farm are names you will recognize if you follow racing at all. Denali Stud and McPeek Racing at Magdalena Farm round out the options and both offer a more intimate look at the day to day life of raising thoroughbreds.
Stallion Tours
If you want to get up close with some of the most valuable athletes in the world, stallion tours are it. These are the horses whose bloodlines shape the future of racing, and some of them are worth tens of millions of dollars. Standing next to one of these animals is a genuinely humbling experience.
Coolmore at Ashford Stud is the big name here and home to some of the most sought after sires in the world. Taylor Made Farm offers a stallion tour in addition to their mares and foals experience. Jonabell Farm is another Godolphin property and always impressive. WinStar Farm, Lanes End Farm, and Three Chimneys Farm are all iconic operations that any racing fan will recognize. Gainesway Farm and Airdrie Stud have been part of the Lexington horse community for decades. Spendthrift Farm also does stallion tours and their roster has been getting stronger every year.
Keeneland Experiences
Keeneland offers several behind the scenes experiences that go way beyond just watching the races. The Morning Works Tour lets you watch horses train at dawn which is one of the most peaceful things you can do in Lexington. The Backstretch Tour takes you into the barn area where the horses live and train. The Behind the Scenes Racing Tour and the Owners Experience give you a look at what it is like from the other side of the rail. The Sunrise Training Tour is exactly what it sounds like and is absolutely worth the early alarm. If you are interested in the sales side of the business, the Behind the Scenes Sales Experience walks you through the auction process at the world's largest thoroughbred sales venue.
Unique Experiences
Some of the best tours in horse country do not fit neatly into one category. Movie Horses of the Bluegrass at Double Dan Horsemanship is one of the most fun things you can do in Lexington. These are the horses that have appeared in movies and television and the trainers are incredible showmen. Mahjong Night at Lanes End Farm is exactly the kind of unexpected event that makes horse country special. Hallway Feeds gives you a look at the nutrition side of the industry which most people never think about. Hagyard Equine Medical Institute is one of the oldest equine veterinary practices in the world and their tour is fascinating. Spy Coast Farm focuses on sport horses rather than thoroughbreds which is a nice change of pace. And Runnymede Farm holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously operated thoroughbred farm in Kentucky, which is saying something in a state where horse farming goes back centuries.
Retirement and Rescue Farms
Some of the most rewarding tours are at farms dedicated to giving horses a second chapter after their racing careers end. The Secretariat Center helps retrain retired thoroughbreds for new careers. New Vocations and Second Stride both do similar work and are nationally respected. BraveHearts Equine Center uses horses for therapeutic programs. The Kentucky Equine Adoption Center and Visit TRF at Chestnut Hall are both doing incredible work making sure these animals are taken care of long after the crowds have gone home. If you only have time for one type of tour and you want to leave feeling genuinely good about the horse industry, a retirement farm is the way to go.
Before You Book
Tour dates and availability change regularly. Some tours are seasonal, especially the mares and foals experiences which are best in spring. Always check visithorsecountry.com for current scheduling and booking before making plans.
Other Ways to Book
Visit Horse Country is the easiest place to start, but it is not the only option.
Some farms take direct bookings through their own websites. Claiborne Farm handles their own reservations, and farms like Three Chimneys and Gainesway will often set something up if you reach out to their stallion offices directly.
If you want a guided experience that handles all the logistics for you, a few local tour companies are worth looking at. Thoroughbred Heritage Horse Farm Tours runs about 3 hours and covers multiple farms. Unique Horse Farm Tours is known for getting you closer to the horses than a standard tour. Horse Farm Tours offers twice daily departures that include two working farms.
For a no booking required option, Kentucky Horse Park is state owned and you can just show up. Keeneland also lets you watch morning workouts for free most days
Final Thoughts
People call Lexington the Horse Capital of the World for a reason. There are over 4,000 horse farms in this area and the industry touches every part of life here. Whether you are a lifelong horse person or someone who has never been within ten feet of a thoroughbred, a horse farm tour is one of the best ways to understand what makes this city so special. Book a tour, see it for yourself, and you will understand why so many people fall in love with this place.
