I have not been to the Breeders' Cup but would love to go someday. This year will be the first chance for a lot of locals, including me, if my schedule permits. I have been to Keeneland before during the regular Spring and Fall meets. The Breeders' Cup info here comes from official sources. The rest comes from me just walking around Keeneland over the years and my own personal experience of what to look for and things to check out.

Let me break down what I know.

The Breeders' Cup World Championships are coming to Keeneland on October 30 and 31, 2026.

What Is the Breeders' Cup?

The Breeders' Cup is the Super Bowl of thoroughbred horse racing. Every year, the best horses in the world come together for two days of championship racing, representing the United States, Europe, Japan, and beyond. We're talking 14 Grade 1 races and $34 million in total purse money. The horses that run in the Breeders' Cup are the ones you've been seeing win all year. This is where champions are crowned.

Why Keeneland?

Keeneland is a horse racing track on the west side of Lexington. I have been there many times over the years for the regular spring and fall meets. The grounds are nice to walk around and there are quite a few social media pic ideas all around. The paddock gets you close to the horses before each race. It's really something to get that close to powerful and beautiful thoroughbreds. I can't really describe the feeling, I am just in awe every time I get to see them that close. FYI, these are also great photo opportunities. I would just stick to cameras though and no flash photography. Horses get spooked easily. I was horseback riding once years ago, and the horse I was on got spooked by an empty tortoise shell on the side of the trail. I didn't fall off, but it jumped back pretty good.

This will be the fourth time Keeneland has hosted the Breeders' Cup, having previously done so in 2015, 2020, and 2022. What I can tell you from my own time at Keeneland during regular meets is that the paddock area gets you up close to the horses before a race. The old oak trees and stonework around the grounds give it a real Kentucky feel. I do not know yet how it all plays out during Breeders' Cup weekend, but Keeneland is a great track to spend a day at.

Keeneland's $100 million-plus capital improvement project includes the three-level Paddock Building with premium hospitality, private terraces, and trackside viewing. The place looks incredible.

The Dates

October 30 and 31, 2026. Two days, 14 championship races. Friday the 30th is traditionally the undercard day with incredible racing in its own right. Saturday the 31st is the big day with the Classic, the Turf, the Distaff, and the Mile. The races that matter most in the sport.

Halloween weekend. In Kentucky. At Keeneland. It's cooler by then, the leaves are turning fall colors, and Keeneland is just beautiful. Sometimes I'll drive through the entrance in the fall just to take in the landscape. Around this time of year, the Headless Horseman makes his annual appearance at Keeneland. If you are here for the event, you will probably run into him. He looks genuinely spooky trotting through the fall foliage. I've always wondered how the horse he rides plays it so chill though. You'd think it would take off and hurdle the infield jumbotron, headed for the sunset.

Tickets

Tickets are sold exclusively through SeatGeek as the official ticketing partner. Starting prices from the official site:

  • General Admission (Friday): $85
  • General Admission (Saturday): $159
  • General Admission (Two-Day Package): $244
  • Reserved Seating: $186
  • Corporate and Groups: $315
  • Dining Packages: $398
  • Box Seating: $1,590
  • Travel Packages: $2,699

For current pricing and availability, see BreedersCup.com/tickets. No tickets are sold on-site at Keeneland for Breeders' Cup, so everything must be purchased in advance.

Parking

On-site parking is extremely limited and must be purchased in advance through the Breeders' Cup. If you can't get a parking pass, complimentary shuttle service will run from downtown Lexington and designated Park and Ride locations. Honestly, taking the shuttle and skipping the parking headache is probably the smarter move anyway. For more on Keeneland parking, including the strategies I actually use during regular meets since I have done this many times, see my Keeneland parking guide.

What to Wear

The dress code is more specific than a regular Keeneland meet. Business formal is required in the Clubhouse. Business casual in the Paddock Building, and no denim in either of those areas. For general admission and most other areas, business or smart casual is recommended but there's no strict requirement.

Check the weather before you go. Late October in Kentucky can be gorgeous and sunny or cold and rainy. Sometimes both in the same afternoon. Layers are your friend.

Where to Stay

Book your hotel now. Seriously. Lexington hotel rooms during the Breeders' Cup will be scarce and expensive. The closer to Keeneland the better. Look at the Versailles Road corridor and anything within a few miles of the track. If everything in Lexington is booked, Georgetown and Frankfort are reasonable drives.

If you have friends or family in Lexington, this is the weekend to call in a favor.

Before and After: Eat and Drink in Lexington

You're going to be hungry and you're going to want to celebrate after. Lexington has you covered. Check out our restaurants page for the full ranked list of Lexington's best spots, updated daily based on real Google review data.

A few neighborhoods worth knowing for the Breeders' Cup weekend: Downtown Lexington has a great concentration of restaurants and bars within a short drive of Keeneland. Chevy Chase is quieter and more local. Hamburg has options if you're staying on the east side of town.

The Bottom Line

The Breeders' Cup at Keeneland is a once-in-a-generation event for Lexington. If you've lived here for years and never paid much attention to horse racing, this is the one to change that. If you're visiting from out of town, build your entire trip around it.

Create your SeatGeek account if you haven't already, and check BreedersCup.com/tickets for current availability. Book your hotel as soon as you can. And enjoy what is going to be one of the best weekends this city has seen in a long time.
