What to Expect

Derby Day at Keeneland has been a Lexington tradition for more than 20 years. Tens of thousands of fans show up to watch the Kentucky Derby on the jumbo screen surrounded by the most beautiful racetrack in the country. You do not need to drive to Louisville to feel the energy of Derby Day, it is right here on Versailles Road.

Live music plays in the Paddock from noon to 6:30 PM. Food trucks line up around the grounds. There is a hat contest, children's activities in the clubhouse from 2 to 6 PM, and BETologists on hand at Wagering Central if you want help placing a bet on the Derby. Two ways to set up: tailgate on The Hill outside the gates with your own chairs and coolers, or buy general admission and head inside the grandstand (coolers and outside food stay in the car).

When post time hits at 6:57 PM ET, the broadcast goes up on the big jumbo TV from The Hill and the whole crowd watches the 153rd Kentucky Derby together. If you have never done it, this is the year. To follow live race data online during the day, see our Kentucky Derby live page.

Derby Day Parking at Keeneland

All public parking on Derby Day is FREE and first-come, first-served. Gates open at 10 AM ET, earlier than typical race days, so plan to arrive early if you want a good spot.

Gate 1

  • Accessible Parking (with complimentary shuttle)
  • The Hill
  • Ride Share (Uber, Lyft, taxi, pickup & drop-off)

Gate 2

  • General Admission
  • Equestrian Room and 1936 Room ticketholders
  • Gold Lot Reserved

Note for accessible parking: Free accessible parking is in semi-paved rows 16-17 on Derby Day. This is different from regular Keeneland race days, when accessible parking is in rows 17-21.

For the regular Keeneland meet parking layout (Spring and Fall meets, not Derby Day), see the full Keeneland parking guide.

The Hill: Free for Everyone

The Hill is Keeneland's official tailgating area, located outside the admission gates. You can bring your own chairs, coolers, tables, and a 10x10 pop-up tent. Family-friendly, bring kids. Watch the Derby on the jumbo TV with thousands of others.

The Hill is free, no ticket required. If you have never been to Keeneland, this is the easiest possible introduction.

Inside the Gates: What You Can and Can't Bring

Heads up if you're going inside the grandstand: outside food and coolers are not permitted inside the admission gates. Concessions and bars are open throughout the grandstand. Chairs may be brought for use on the North Terrace and Track Apron, but coolers stay in the car (or stay on The Hill).

Short version: tailgating with a cooler? You want The Hill. Going inside the grandstand with a $10 General Admission ticket? Leave the cooler in the car, bring a chair if you want one for the North Terrace or Track Apron, plan to buy food and drinks at concessions.
