Lexington KY With Kids: Family Guide

Visiting or living in Lexington KY with kids is one of the best things about this city. I say that as someone who has spent years exploring every park, playground, museum, and kid friendly restaurant in town. The combination of outdoor space, educational attractions, affordable entertainment, and a community that genuinely welcomes families makes Lexington a standout. Here is your complete guide.

Raven Run Nature Sanctuary

If I had to pick one outdoor spot in Lexington that every family should visit, it is Raven Run Nature Sanctuary on Jacks Creek Pike. This 734 acre nature preserve sits on the palisades of the Kentucky River and offers miles of well marked hiking trails. The main trail to the overlook is about a mile and a half, manageable for kids six and older with a little encouragement.

The overlook at the end is the payoff. You are standing high above the Kentucky River with views of the cliffs and forests below. It is one of the most beautiful natural spots in central Kentucky. The nature center at the entrance has exhibits about local wildlife that younger kids enjoy, and the staff is always friendly and helpful.

Explorium of Lexington

The Explorium of Lexington (formerly the Children's Museum) on West Main Street downtown is a must for families with kids under 10. The hands on exhibits are designed to spark curiosity, and the rotating exhibits keep things fresh even for repeat visitors. The water play area is a favorite, and the building blocks section can keep little engineers busy for an hour.

Admission is affordable and they run special events throughout the year. Check their schedule before you go because they occasionally have themed weekends that add extra activities.

The UK Arboretum

The University of Kentucky Arboretum on Alumni Drive is free, beautiful, and perfect for kids. The grounds cover 100 acres with walking paths, themed gardens, and wide open spaces for running. The Children's Garden area has sensory features and kid scaled plantings that make it feel like an adventure.

I especially love bringing kids here in spring when everything is blooming. The walk through the native Kentucky landscape section teaches them about local plants and trees, and there are benches along the way for resting. Pack a picnic and make a morning of it.

Jacobson Park

Jacobson Park on Richmond Road is the biggest park in Lexington and a family favorite. The playground is massive, with equipment for all age groups. The lake offers paddleboat rentals in warmer months, and the fishing is popular with kids who have the patience for it. There are open fields for soccer, frisbee, and kite flying, plus a dog park if your family includes a four legged member.

The park also connects to trails that wind through the property, and in fall the colors are spectacular. This is the kind of park where you can easily spend a full afternoon.

Masterson Station Park

On the west side of town, Masterson Station Park on Leestown Road is another excellent family park. It has a great playground, a splash pad that runs in summer, baseball fields, and walking trails. The park is less crowded than Jacobson, which is a plus on busy weekends. The splash pad alone is worth the trip when it is hot outside.

Family Restaurants

Lexington has plenty of places where kids are welcome and the food is actually good. Sutton's on Euclid Avenue in Chevy Chase is a diner classic with burgers, milkshakes, and a casual atmosphere. Goodfellas Pizzeria on Limestone Street serves pizza that kids devour and adults genuinely enjoy. Joella's Hot Chicken on Southland Drive has a range of heat levels including a mild option that works for younger palates.

For a treat, take the kids to Crank and Boom on South Hill Station for locally made ice cream. The flavors are creative but they always have classics like vanilla and chocolate for picky eaters. On warmer days, the line out the door is a sign you are in the right place.

For a sit down family dinner, Malone's on Tates Creek Road has a kids menu and a welcoming atmosphere. Masala on Woodland Avenue serves Indian food that adventurous young eaters will love.

Seasonal Activities

Lexington has great seasonal events for families. In fall, Evans Orchard in Georgetown (just north of Lexington) offers apple picking, hayrides, and a corn maze. In December, Southern Lights at the Kentucky Horse Park is a drive through holiday light display that kids love. The Lexington Farmers Market on Saturday mornings is a year round family activity with food, crafts, and live music.

Check our events calendar for family friendly happenings throughout the year, and read our neighborhood guides to find the best family friendly areas to stay or live. Lexington is a city that was made for families, and your kids will thank you for bringing them here.
