Best Family Day in Lexington KY

Spending a family day in Lexington KY is one of those things that reminds you why this city is such a great place to raise kids. I have done this circuit dozens of times with my own family and friends visiting from out of town, and it never gets old. The mix of outdoor space, animals, culture, and good food makes Lexington one of the most family friendly cities in the South.

Morning at the Kentucky Horse Park

Start your day at the Kentucky Horse Park on Iron Works Pike. Plan to arrive around 9:30 when the park opens, because you will want at least two hours here. The kids can meet retired racehorses, watch farrier demonstrations, and explore the International Museum of the Horse. The park sits on more than 1,200 acres of bluegrass farmland, and just walking the grounds with the white plank fences and rolling hills is a treat.

The Breeds Barn is a highlight for younger kids. They get to see different horse breeds up close and learn about what makes each one special. There is also a pony ride area for little ones, which is always a hit. Pack sunscreen and comfortable shoes because you will be doing a lot of walking.

Late Morning at the UK Arboretum

After the Horse Park, drive down to the University of Kentucky Arboretum on Alumni Drive. This is one of Lexington's best kept secrets for families, and it is completely free. The Arboretum covers 100 acres with walking trails, themed gardens, and open fields where kids can run and play.

The Children's Garden is specifically designed for younger visitors with interactive features and sensory elements. My kids always gravitate toward the walk through the Kentucky woods section, where the trails feel like a real forest even though you are minutes from campus. In spring the dogwoods and redbuds are in full bloom and it is genuinely beautiful.

Lunch

For lunch, head to Sutton's on Euclid Avenue in Chevy Chase. This is a classic Lexington diner that has been around for decades. The burgers are great, the milkshakes are better, and the atmosphere is perfectly casual for families. If Sutton's has a long wait, Joella's Hot Chicken on Southland Drive is another excellent option that kids love.

You can also swing by Crank and Boom on South Hill Station for dessert. Their ice cream is made locally and the flavors rotate seasonally. The Kentucky Beer Cheese flavor is a conversation starter, and the Blackberry and Buttermilk is outstanding.

Afternoon Options

After lunch, you have a few great options depending on your kids' ages and energy levels.

For younger children, the Lexington Children's Museum in downtown on Main Street is perfect. It is interactive, educational, and keeps kids entertained for a solid hour or two. The science exhibits and the play kitchen are always popular.

For older kids or families who want to stay outdoors, head to Jacobson Park on Richmond Road. The park has a massive playground, a lake for fishing, and plenty of space for frisbee or soccer. You can also rent paddle boats on the lake, which is a fun way to spend an afternoon.

If your family enjoys nature and light hiking, drive out to Raven Run Nature Sanctuary on Jacks Creek Pike. The trails are well marked and range from easy to moderate. The overlook above the Kentucky River is stunning and makes for a great family photo. This is one of my favorite spots in the entire city, and it feels a world away from everything.

Evening Wind Down

For dinner, keep it easy at Goodfellas Pizzeria on Limestone Street downtown. The pizza is fantastic and the atmosphere is family friendly. Another great choice is Malone's on Tates Creek Road, which has a kids menu and the kind of crowd that does not blink when a toddler drops a fork.

After dinner, take a stroll through Gratz Park near the downtown courthouse. The old trees, the historic homes, and the quiet streets make it a peaceful way to end the day. In warmer months, the fountain at Triangle Park on Main Street is a great spot for kids to cool off.
