The Perfect Weekend in Lexington KY
The Perfect Weekend in Lexington KY
If you are planning a weekend in Lexington KY, you picked the right city. I have lived here for years and I still find new things to love about this place every single weekend. Whether you are visiting for the first time or finally making the trip a friend has been telling you about, this itinerary will show you the real Lexington. Not the tourist traps, but the spots locals actually care about.
Friday Evening
Start your weekend on Friday night in the Distillery District on Manchester Street. This is one of the coolest redevelopment stories in town. Old warehouses turned into restaurants, bars, and gathering spots. Grab dinner at Goodfellas Pizzeria, which serves some of the best New York style pizza in Kentucky, or walk over to Middle Fork Kitchen Bar for a farm to table meal that highlights local ingredients.
After dinner, catch some live music at The Burl on South Broadway. This is Lexington's best small venue, and on any given Friday you might hear local bluegrass, indie rock, or a touring act that chose Lexington over Louisville. Check the events page for what is playing during your visit.
If you are more of a cocktail bar person, head to Ethereal Brewing or walk over to Best Friend Bar on North Limestone. Both are within easy reach of downtown and both have the kind of laid back energy that makes Lexington feel like home.
Saturday Morning
Wake up early on Saturday and head to the Lexington Farmers Market at the corner of Cheapside and Main Street downtown. This is one of the best farmers markets in the state, and on a Saturday morning in spring or fall it is packed with local vendors selling everything from fresh produce to Kentucky honey to handmade soap. Grab a coffee from a local roaster and take your time walking through the stalls.
From there, drive out to Keeneland on Versailles Road. If it is race season (April or October), you absolutely need to spend a few hours at the track. Even if it is not race season, the grounds are open and you can walk around the beautiful property, watch morning workouts, and get a feel for why this is considered one of the finest racetracks in the world.
Saturday Afternoon
After Keeneland, take a drive down Old Frankfort Pike. This is one of the most beautiful roads in America, and I am not exaggerating. Stone fences line both sides, horse farms stretch out in every direction, and the light through the trees is something special. It is a short drive but it captures the heart of the Bluegrass.
For lunch, swing by Wallace Station on Versailles Road. It is a deli inside a converted gas station and the sandwiches are legendary. Try the Huli Huli Chicken or the Signature Hot Brown.
Spend the afternoon exploring the University of Kentucky campus on South Limestone. Walk through the Arboretum, which is free and gorgeous year round, or stop by the UK Art Museum. If you are a sports fan, walk past Rupp Arena and snap a photo. Even in the off season, the energy of Big Blue Nation is everywhere.
Saturday Evening
For dinner, make a reservation at Honeywood on Palomar Centre Drive. This is one of my favorite restaurants in Lexington. The menu is creative, the cocktails are excellent, and the atmosphere is just right for a Saturday night. If Honeywood is booked, try Malone's on Tates Creek Road for a classic Lexington steak dinner.
End your Saturday with a walk through downtown. Lexington at night is beautiful, especially around the courthouse and the old Victorian homes along Gratz Park.
Sunday Morning
On your last morning, head to Chevy Chase on Euclid Avenue for brunch. Doodles is the go to spot and the line is worth it. After brunch, grab ice cream at Crank and Boom, which makes some of the most creative flavors you will find anywhere. The Kentucky Coffee flavor is a personal favorite.
If you have time before heading out, drive over to the Kentucky Horse Park on Iron Works Pike. You can meet retired thoroughbreds, learn the history of horse racing in Kentucky, and walk the beautiful grounds. It is especially great if you are traveling with kids.
Final Tips
Lexington is a walkable, friendly, affordable city. People here are genuinely welcoming. Check out our full events calendar to see what else is happening during your visit, and take a look at our neighborhood guides to find the perfect area to explore. The Kentucky Bourbon Trail is also right at your doorstep if you want to add a distillery day to your trip.
Come for the weekend. You might just start looking at real estate before you leave.
